    PRODUCT OVERVIEW

    One device.

    Three functions.

The STRATUM 9 DECT NR+ Gateway is more than just a simple access point – it is a versatile network node designed for industrial environments. Depending on the application, it can operate in three different modes: as a point-to-point radio link between two locations/systems, as a stationary base station managing multiple mobile S9 - DECT NR+ Gateways with "Seamless Handover," or as a protocol bridge connecting any DECT NR+ device to your Ethernet network.

    Interfaces

The gateway features an aluminum housing with an IP54 protection rating, operates on 24 V DC, and is equipped with two M12 Ethernet ports and one CAN-FD port. It is designed for permanent installation in demanding environments – from factory halls to outdoor facilities.

    Scheduled Access vs. Random Access

DECT NR+ supports two fundamentally different approaches regarding channel access. Understanding the difference is crucial for selecting the right solution for your application.

    Scheduled Access

Scheduled Access uses Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), where the base station (Fixed Termination Point) centrally assigns dedicated, recurring time slots to each device. There are no conflicts, no listening, no back-off – each device knows exactly when it can transmit. This leads to a deterministic, collision-free communication with guaranteed latency.

The STRATUM 9 MAC layer has been specifically designed for industrial automation: AGV fleet control, real-time PLC communication, robot coordination, and all scenarios where predictable timing is not optional but essential. It enables reliable, deterministic communication with clearly defined transmission behavior, even in demanding and highly dynamic industrial environments.

    Random Access

Random Access uses a Listen-Before-Talk (LBT) protocol with binary exponential backoff. Before transmission, each device checks if the channel is free. If it is occupied, the device waits a random period of time and tries again. This approach is well-suited for event-driven, bursty traffic – such as sensor readings or alarm messages – where devices transmit data infrequently and unpredictably.

The star topology with Random Access is ideal for applications such as smart meters, sensor monitoring, and consumer IoT, where absolute time guarantees are less important than simplicityand broad device compatibility.

    Feature Comparison

    APPLICATION SCENARIOS

    Three modes. Unlimited possibilities.

Every application is different. Our DECT NR+ gateway adapts to your architecture – whether you need a wireless bridge, a base station (FT) for multiple mobile DECT NR+ gateways (PT) or a protocol gateway for your network.

    Point to Point

Two DECT NR+ gateways communicate directly via DECT NR+, creating a wireless bridge between two locations. No cabling is required between the endpoints – only power and Ethernet at each end.

    Practical use cases:

    The challenge

Lifts and elevators require reliable real-time communication between the cabin and the control system – for position data, door control and safety signals. Drag chains wear out, slip rings are maintenance-intensive and conventional 2.4 GHz radio technologies such as Wi-Fi are often too susceptible to interference in metal shafts. In addition, the 2.4 GHz band is heavily used by consumer devices and other wireless systems, which can lead to congestion, unpredictable performance and reduced reliability.

How DECT NR+ solves the problem

Two S9 gateways form a point-to-point DECT NR+ connection between the lift car and the top of shaft station. DECT NR+ operates in the dedicated 1.9 GHz band, separating it from congested 2.4 GHz environments and making it far less susceptible to interference from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and consumer electronics. This results in a more stable and predictable radio connection, even in challenging metal environments. Combined with deterministic latency, real-time control signals arrive within defined time windows – without cables, slip rings or maintenance.

    The challenge

A water utility operates pumping stations in remote locations that are far from the main control centre. Mobile phone coverage is unreliable, and dedicated leased lines are expensive for each remote location.

How DECT NR+ solves the problem

A point-to-point DECT NR+ connection links each pumping station to the control centre. The dedicated 1.9 GHz frequency spectrum ensures interference-free operation, and the gateway delivers SCADA data in real time without the recurring costs of an LTE connection.

    The challenge
A PLC must communicate with a robot in real time – for motion commands, sensor feedback and safety signals. The robot's range of motion makes cabling impractical, and Wi-Fi leads to unpredictable latencies that disrupt the control loop and cause emergency shutdowns.

How DECT NR+ solves the problem

An S9 gateway on the PLC and a second S9 gateway on the robot establish a dedicated point-to-point DECT NR+ connection. The deterministic Scheduled Access protocol guarantees low latency for cyclical data exchange with the PLC. The interference-free 1.9 GHz spectrum ensures stable communication even in RF-interference-prone industrial environments with welding equipment, motors and other machines.

    Point to Multipoint

Stationary S9-DECT NR+ gateways act as base stations (fixed termination points), while mobile S9-DECT Nr+ gateways – mounted on AGVs, robots or mobile platforms – are operated as portable termination points. The STRATUM 9 Scheduled Access MAC Layer assigns deterministic time slots to each mobile gateway. When moving between base stations, ‘seamless handover’ between the base stations ensures lossless communication flow.

    Practical use cases:

    The challenge

Over 40 driverless transport vehicles are in use in a large warehouse, requiring continuous, deterministic communication for navigation and collision avoidance. The use of Wi-Fi causes unpredictable latency spikes, leading to emergency stops.

How DECT NR+ solves the problem

Stationary S9-DECT NR+ gateways serve as base stations throughout the facility, while each AGV carries a mobile S9-DECT NR+ gateway as a communication endpoint. STRATUM 9's Scheduled Access MAC Layer provides each mobile gateway with dedicated time slots, ensuring deterministic latency. Seamless handover between stationary gateways ensures uninterrupted control while the AGVs travel through the warehouse.

    The challenge

A flexible manufacturing cell uses mobile robots that move between workstations. The robots must be coordinated with the central PLC in real time, but the Wi-Fi connection causes problems that disrupt synchronisation.

How DECT NR+ solves the problem

Each mobile robot is equipped with a mobile S9 gateway that communicates with stationary S9 gateways installed throughout the manufacturing cell. The point-to-multipoint topology with seamless handover between stationary gateways ensures continuous communication during robot movement. The Scheduled Access protocol ensures collision-free transmission between all mobile and stationary gateways, enabling uninterrupted real-time PLC integration.

    The challenge
In sorting systems, electric monorail systems and other conveyor systems, many mobile participants must communicate simultaneously and reliably with a central infrastructure. Metallic environments, reflections, large system expansions and many participants active in parallel often make classic radio technologies unstable or difficult to plan.

How DECT NR+ solves the problem

DECT NR+ enables reliable point-to-multipoint communication between a central radio station and numerous mobile units throughout the facility. Thanks to the dedicated frequency band, deterministic communication mechanisms and high robustness in industrial environments, position data, statuses and control information can be transmitted reliably and with predictable behaviour.

    Network Gateway

The S9-DECT NR+ gateway serves as a central access point for all DECT NR+ devices that need to send data to the network. It connects DECT NR+ to Ethernet – compatible with both the STRATUM 9 MAC layer and the Nordic Semiconductor MAC layer. Your gateway to the DECT NR+ network.

    Practical use cases:

    The challenge

A large industrial site operates thousands of wireless measurement points throughout its facility. Each device uses DECT NR+ (Nordic MAC Layer) for communication, but the collected data still needs to be transferred to the central monitoring and analysis platform via the existing corporate network.

How DECT NR+ solves the problem

S9 - DECT NR+ gateways form the interface between DECT NR+ and Ethernet. They collect data from all devices within range and transmit it reliably to the network. Thanks to their support for the Nordic MAC layer, they are also compatible with standard DECT NR+ devices.

    The challenge

An existing factory wants to equip older machines with wireless vibration sensors for predictive maintenance. The sensors use DECT NR+ for communication, but the factory's SCADA system only accepts data sources connected via Ethernet.

How DECT NR+ solves the problem

The S9-DECT NR+ gateway transmits the DECT NR+ sensor data directly to the factory's Ethernet network. The SCADA system recognises the gateway as a standard network device, so no changes to the existing infrastructure are necessary. The STRATUM 9 toolchain handles the configuration and monitoring of the entire deployment.

    The challenge
An OEM develops a special DECT NR+ device for a specific application, e.g. mobile diagnostics, remote I/O, machine data acquisition or asset tracking. The wireless terminal device is very application-specific, but customers also expect easy integration into standard Ethernet-based industrial networks. Developing both the device and the gateway would increase development costs and cause unnecessary duplication of work.

How DECT NR+ solves the problem

The S9 DECT NR+ Gateway enables OEMs to use a proven Ethernet bridge for their own DECT NR+ products. Instead of investing in parallel gateway development, they can leverage an existing infrastructure component that connects their devices to the customer's network and backend systems, reducing effort, risk and time to market.
